The Third Son, Julie Wu’s debut novel

The Fiction Writers Review heard that I am writing a novel set in Taiwan, and so they asked if I would like to read and review The Third Son, by Julie Wu, set in Taiwan and America in the 1940s and 1950s. The novel describes a malnourished, ill-treated Taiwanese boy raising himself, by hard work and some brave decisions, to achieve a secure and independent life in America.

It was a treat to read about the Taiwan of that time, and to be re-acquainted, in a fictional setting, with the discomforts and resentments that (sometimes) make up (part of) Chinese family life.

You can read my full review here, and also read an essay, by Wu, of how she came to write the novel, here, at Beyond the Margins.

Best wishes!

Daniel
