Novel Roadmap #3: why your protagonist needs two desires

Are you writing a novel? For the past week, I’ve offered a mini training course (delivered in short videos) for how you would begin and start writing your next novel.

Video #1 talked about how to start a novel, and how you might write the first twenty pages.

Video #2 talked about narration, and how it’s often useful to move between a “close” and a “distant” narrative voice.

Here is the third (and final) video in the series.

It’s talking about your protagonist, and suggest that there is one essential feature that a good protagonist needs. It also gives you an easy plan for the first 50-80 pages of your book.

Additionally, the video gives you a model for pitching your novel to an agent, editor, or reader.

I hope you like it!

  • Hi Daniel!
Thank you for three very inspiring videos. The advices about two narrators (and how to have two narrators, when you write in 1. person) and two goals have helped me to see, how I can make my novel more alive and dynamic. Thanks for that!
And fine illustrations in the third video 🙂
Looking forward to seeing, what alse you come up with.
    Best wishes from Denmark,

    • That’s great. And I’m so glad you liked the animations. It’s remarkable what an amateur can do with Keynote.

    • Ha! I will be take the compliment. I think it’s just the “recording late at night” effect..

  • Brilliant series, DDW! I learned so much. Looking forward to connecting with you on the novelroadmap.com as I am struggling my way through my first memoir. I appreciate all the help and advice I can get.

Also, I thought I would pass on this website/awards contest to you as I feel if you had books you recently published would do really well: http://www.indiebookawards. I believe your work would help many people.

    Thank you for sharing.
