What's something that strikes you about the setting / characters of Jade City? What's one specific aspect of the world-building that is interesting?

Note: I'm relaxing the rule from last week about comparing the world of the novel to our world. Of course, let's be respectful and humble when we make assertions about the story's apparent connection to peoples and places in our world, but feel free to share your thoughts about the "real" elements of the world-building.

HOWEVER, the rule about no spoilers is absolutely still in place. No spoilers, please. I'm not trying to do this just to avoiding "ruining the story" for people who haven't read ahead; I want us to focus our craft attention on each section in turn.

PS If I slowed down the reading pace a little, what would you think? Part of me feels like we are moving through the novel too quickly. But then it would be two months to read a long-ish novel like Jade City, not one. Thoughts?
